Encounter with the differently-abled
VALUEs highlight: Respect, compassion, and empathy
As part of the character formation of Xavier School students, the Grade 6 students visited different institutions that house differently-abled persons (Tahanang Walang Hagdan and Philippine National School for the Blind). This service-oriented activity is called "Service Interaction." Through this activity, the school aims to instill in students the basic principles of respect, empathy, equality, and the Jesuit ideal of being "man for others."
Since the Grade 6 Service Interaction was a major activity for the students, the Christian Life Education (Religious and Values Education) subject integrated the activity into their course unit which focused on learning about the first three of the Ten Commandments. In line with the Christian Faith, the big idea here was that "loving God means one has to love his neighbor also." The Service Interaction was a way for the students to apply what they have learned about the big idea in class. Tech Integrated Project As part of their reflection, the Grade 6 students were asked to create a reflection journal book, which shared their encounter with their partner from the institution that they visited and the insights and learning they drew from their experiences. The iPad app used was Book Creator (available for iOS, Android, and Windows). The best works were published and are now available through the iBooks Store. In 2015, the first eBooks for this project were published in the iBooks Store. This wonderful and successful project was featured in Book Creator's website. Read the article here.
